Stir with a knife; stir up strife

  1. Does anyone know where this came from and to what it refers?

  2. I don't know what it refers to, other than that it's considered bad luck to stir your drink with a knife, but my mother used to say it and she's from Nottingham, so it may be a Midlands saying.

I can sort of imagine it being seen as aggressive to have your pocket knife out at table back in the days of old when knights were bold etc, but maybe that's reading too much into it.
